Commentator breaks Australian discrimination law (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? A popular right-wing commentator was found guilty Wednesday of breaking Australian discrimination law by implying that fair-skinned Aborigines chose to identify as indigenous for profit and career advancement.

Federal Court Justice Mordy Bromberg ruled that fair-skinned Aborigines were likely to have been "offended, insulted, humiliated or intimidated by the imputations" included in columnist Andrew Bolt's two articles published by the Herald Sun newspaper in Melbourne in 2009.

Bromberg ruled out Bolt and his publisher's defense under a clause of the Racial Discrimination Act that exempts "fair comment" because the articles "contained errors of fact, distortions of the truth and inflammatory and provocative language."

Bromberg said he will prohibit reproduction of the offending articles and will consider ordering the newspaper to publish a correction if it does print an apology.

Bolt, who writes opinion pieces for newspapers around Australia and hosts a nationally broadcast weekly public affairs television program, described the ruling as a defeat for freedom of speech.

"This is a terrible day for free speech in this country," he told reporters outside court. "It is particularly a restriction on the freedom of all Australians to discuss multiculturalism and how people identify themselves."

But Aboriginal activist Pat Eatock, who filed the court action, said Bolt's two articles "were not professional journalism."

"He set out to offend from the word 'go,'" she said.

The articles, headlined "It's so hip to be black" and "White fellas in the black," named 18 prominent Australians of mixed heritage whom Bolt wrote were part of a trend of choosing to be identified as Aboriginal.

Nine of them joined the court action, testifying that none "chose" to be Aboriginal. They said they had all identified as being indigenous since childhood.

Some were in the Melbourne court room on Wednesday and cheered when Bromberg made his ruling.

"I believe the result means that Australia will have a higher quality and more responsible media and that to some degree the persecution of Aboriginal people in the press will be lessened," author Anita Heiss, who was one of the Aboriginal witnesses in the case, said in a statement.

The Bolt articles touch on public concerns in Australia that people who do not appear obviously Aboriginal benefit from government programs designed to lift Australia's indigenous population out of poverty.

Aborigines make up 2.3 percent of Australia's 23 million people and are the nation's most impoverished ethnic group. They die more than a decade younger than other Australians and endure higher rates of disease, joblessness and imprisonment.

The Racial Discrimination Act became law in 1975 under Australia's multicultural policy to protect minorities against intolerance. It is not enforced by prison sentences or fines, but enables judges to make orders to correct breaches.

Bolt and his publisher, Herald and Weekly Times, must meet with the plaintiffs to discuss appropriate court orders that would reflect the judgment.

Herald and Weekly Times did not immediately comment on Wednesday.

'Dancing With The Stars': Nancy Grace's Mishap, Ricki Lake's Success

Plus: Rob Kardashian steps it up in week two.
By Kelley L. Carter

Talk-show hosts made the biggest headlines on Monday night's "Dancing With the Stars," with Ricki Lake earning the highest marks and Nancy Grace suffering a near-wardrobe malfunction.

Here's how it all played out:

Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
The soccer goalie kicked off the competition with the jive, giving the judges exactly what they wanted. It was a fitting opening from Solo, who set the tone for what was to come from other contestants. Hard-to-please head judge Len Goodman said, "It was quick! It was sharp. Unfortunately, you lost your timing a little bit here and there. There wasn't quite the synchronicity. However, having said that, first out, first class." 19/30

Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas
In their quickstep, Cavallari was aiming to do a Hollywood-glam interpretation of the dance. Dressed in a sexy, long white gown, à la Marilyn Monroe, the judges said the reality-TV star nailed it. Goodman made a few notes but said he thought it was a great improvement from her first week out. His fellow judges concurred. "I've been bedazzled by the blond bombshell! I love old, Hollywood glamor! This performance was twinkling with pleasure," Bruno Tonioli gushed. Carrie Ann Inaba said: "Last week nervous; this week stunning! You kept your hold, you kept your frame. I thought it was gorgeous!" 22/30

David Arquette and Kym Johnson
The judges appreciated the enthusiasm Arquette offered in his routine this week, saying he followed directions by not holding back. Other than that, they think his routine needs work, saying he lost a lot of technique. Still, he was complimented for gaining confidence. "Carson has some competition! That was Carson-esque! What I love about it is the incredible enthusiasm that came out of you," Inaba said, comparing Arquette to fellow contestant Carson Kressley. "You let it all hang out on the dance floor. I think this is the direction for you to stay in." 18/30

Elisabetta Canalis and Val Chmerkovskiy
The Italian actress and host, who is partnered with newcomer and Maksim's brother Val, impressed the judges with a big improvement from last week. That said, there's work to do. "I'm not going to say much. I'm just going to say this: It's not great, but it was better than last week," Goodman said. "The gears were grinding, the engines were hot. The pistols were pumping. Keep working," Tonioli said. 21/30

Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke
The two danced the jive, and Kardashian looked every bit the surfer dude, dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and his hair done up in a pompadour. The judges said it was a proper performance, and Burke declared that Kardashian is a better dancer than his sister Kim, who was a contestant on another season. "You have the dancing gene and it is coming out!" Burke yelled out. Said Tonioli: "You started to blossom. You're starting to find your own voice. You're having a good time. Your timing was excellent. But I'm telling you, great, great job." 21/30

Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya
Judges said the worst dancers on the show were the most fun to watch, which is the blessing and the curse of this performance. They acknowledged that there was a lot of work put into the routine, but there is much more technical work to be done. "I saw improvement, yet I'm not sure what happened to that improvement in the dance. You were a little wobbly. It had good intent. So that was a little disconcerting. But great enthusiasm," Inaba said. 18/30

Ricki Lake and Derek Hough
Lake and Hough hit the stage dancing to Outkast's "Hey Ya," and Goodman said there were a couple of steps that disturbed them a bit. "I liked the fun. I liked the exuberance. There was a lot of under-the-arm passes. But it was an improvement on last week," Goodman said. His fellow judges didn't exactly agree. Tonioli liked her kicks, and Inaba called it the "best jive of the night so far!" 23/30

Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer
After last week's much-anticipated performance, Bono wanted to up the ante with the quickstep, a difficult routine considering that Bono was nursing a bum knee. In the rehearsal segments, he complained that he had old, creaky knees and said his doctor gave him something to help with his joints. They ended up taking out some of the flashier bits of their routine because of his injuries. Goodman said it was too slow and needed more attack. Everyone else was in agreement. "I could actually see you in pain, but that's part of what goes with the territory on this show. Unfortunately, you're not going to get a great score tonight," Inaba warned. 17/30

Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani
The two danced the jive, and the judges thought it was good but lacked exuberance. "I really enjoy watching you dance. It's genuinely pretty. But I will say, I kind of felt like you played it a little safe. After what we saw last week, I said 'she's going to come out and kill this jive,' " Inaba said. 21/30

Nancy Grace and Tristan McManus
The TV host and prosecutor had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction at the end of her routine, but the TV cameras didn't catch it, instead focusing on the reaction of the audience. "On the European version, that would be perfectly fine," host Tom Bergeron joked. Goodman loved her routine, saying, "How refreshing! Let me tell you: Every quickstep has broken the moves of the dance. You did that. I know what people are saying. They're going to say, 'Where's the flash? Where was the razzamatazz?' I don't care. It was a proper quickstep," Goodman said, who gave her an 8. 21/30

J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff
The last couple to take the stage danced the jive and upped the ante from last week's impressive Viennese waltz. The war hero scored high praise from the judges, who said he was born to dance. "You have a feel for the music that comes from within you. The most satisfying overall performance of the night," Tonioli said. 22/30

Cat bathing is Necessary for Cats | Car Dvd Ipad Iphone CellPhone

Cats lick themselves clean with their tongues and that is why some people think that cats should never be bathed but this concept among people is very wrong just because cats needs showers just so that the dirt and all mud on them should be cleaned. Cat bathing should be promoted; cat?s coat and skin should be kept in good condition. Some cats just love water and they are up for cat bathingbut most of the cats just hate getting wet with water and bathing. There are many grooming tools available in the market and one has to choose the best tool according to the needs and requirements of the cat. Nails clipping and ear cleaning is also an important part of cat bathing.

Mane and tails shampoo are used on pets just for their proper hair growth. Main and Tails shampoo gives a very shiny and fresh look to the pets.

These shampoos were made and specifically formulated for pets in the beginning. After that slowly and gradually people felt inclined towards the usage of mane and tails shampoo for their hair as well. They are quite an important and an interesting product just because they are used for the treatment of pet?s hair and they are designed to look strong and heavy and healthy. Horse hair gives a very vibrant touch to a horse?s appearance and looks very neat. And the itching part is just eliminated just because main and tails shampoo gives a very natural look to the horse?s coat. The horse gets so much stronger that nothing can make them shed or break. The grooming of horse?s coat and hair is very necessary just because they prevent them from falling off, allergies and different types of bacteria?s that have fungal characteristics. That is why a pet owner should be happy to keep the pets like horses, dogs, cats etc but has to be careful with their health.

Pig flies over London in Pink Floyd album tribute (AP)

LONDON ? It's a bird, it's a plane ? no, it's a pig, floating above London.

The 30 foot by 15 foot (9 meter by 4.5 meter) inflatable porker soared Monday over the derelict Battersea Power station ? an image famous from the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album "Animals."

The scene was recreated to mark the release of remastered versions of Pink Floyd's 14 studio albums.

Organizers had hoped to use the original vinyl pig, which has been in storage for 35 years. But it was found to be leaky, and a replica was created instead.

There was no replay of the moment during the 1976 photo shoot when the original pig broke free of its moorings and floated into the flight path for Heathrow Airport. It was later found in a farmer's field.

Another For Sale By Owner Home SOLD ! | Lake Charles Real ...

Lake Charles For Sale By Owner

I JUST SOLD ANOTHER? LAKE CHARLES FOR SALE BY OWNER HOUSE!?

Thats Right?.. 5705 Birch Street in Barbe Country Estates? was a? Lake Charles For Sale by Owner home that just closed courtesy of MARILYN BOUDREAUX, Century 21 Mike D. Bono & Co.?s

As a Homeowner when it comes time to sell your Lake Charles home, you may think you can save money? selling your home yourself instead of using the services of a Lake Charles Realtor.? If this is what you are thinking, you? may be kidding yourself.? What starts out as an easy journey to try to save the cost of a commission, can also cost you a qualified home buyer not to mention the frustration and inconvenience of trying to do things yourself.

Less than 3% of closed homes are For Sale by Owner properties.

Did you know that many Lake Charles Home Buyers want to be represented by a REALTOR?? With the low interest rates? home buyers are motivated to purchase their first Lake Charles home.

  • First time home buyers need the help of a Realtor to guide them through the home purchase process.
  • First time home buyers are hesitant to inquire about For Sale By Owner properties.

Why do I know this?.. because I work with a lot of Lake Charles first time home buyers? and just closed? this For Sale By Owner? home located in Barbe Country Estates? this week.? The Buyers and new owners are newlyweds and Lake Charles first time home buyers!?? We had been looking at homes in South Lake Charles and I told them if they? found a For Sale By Owner home they wanted to see to call me.? In this case the home they loved was a For Sale by Owner and? the Sellers understood that the buyers wanted to be represented by a Realtor, which was me, Marilyn Boudreaux, Century 21 Mike D. Bono & Co.?s

first time home buyers in Lake Charles

?

?

How do I know so much about For Sale By Owners?? Because I have SOLD For Sale By Owner properties to Buyers I have represented!? That?s right REALTORS are the ones with the Buyers, just remember that when you are trying to sell your home on your own and your phone is not ringing with interest.

I work with qualified Lake Charles? buyers looking to purchase? homes in Lake Charles.?? I am very cooperative and will be glad to call a FSBO and even show my buyers a For Sale By Owner home if the Seller is willing to pay me a 3% commission

If you wish for me to represent you as a Seller in the transaction I can also do that and advise you.? This is a wise decision because if your home does go under contract you will have many questions about what needs to take place next and if I represent you I can answer those questions and explain paperwork required such as inspections and addendums.

Why work with a Lake Charles Realtor?? It makes sense to hire someone who knows what they?re doing when selling your most valuable asset.

If you really want to give the FSBO route a try in order to sell your Lake Charles home, I say go ahead and exhaust your efforts but when you decide you need help, for goodness sake, make sure you contact an experienced, skilled, professional REALTOR who will work with you in achieving your goals! Remember? REALTORS are connected to the Buyers

The Shocking Side ? effects of professional bodybuilding

We all know that professional bodybuilders are some of the muscular, lean and powerful on the planet. They eat, exercise, sleep and use of drugs among the best in the world to be. This is a fact. When I began, only one thing ? the biggest and best on stage. However, once they leave the stage, bringing a new set of challenges.

The loss of size

We all know that fall. You eat less food. They are training with lessIntensity. And they cut the drug. Expected and "that they are paid a lot of size. This can result in mental anguish in one, if not in all cases.

Long-term testosterone supplementation

Remain after his retirement, most professional bodybuilders testosterone supplementation for the rest of their lives because their body's natural production of testosterone itself from years of failure due to the presence of synthetic hormones. This is aCost, both financially and for the side effects of testosterone on the artificial body.

The long-term use of drugs

Besides the integration of testosterone, many bodybuilders are dependent on painkillers or over-the-counter pain killers to eliminate day joint and muscle pain that comes with years of hard work.

Bone growth / acromegaly

With the use of growth hormone (GH), are not only the muscles that grow. Termination of bone growthone more time in the use of GH. Not meet a high professional bodybuilder with small hands. Grow. Just as the elbows, knees and even skulls. It is an accepted part of sport, not a big deal if the competitors. However, if they lose muscle mass, bone remain to be stretched.

Organ growth

Human growth hormone has an impact on the internal organs. Just as skin, muscles, bones and grow ? the organs grow. Scientists have not yetconclusive results from the effects of magnification systems for the cardiac, digestive, respiratory and circulatory health in the long run. This generation of bodybuilders, amateur and professional, are the test cases in the future.

Most of the men who participated are from 1960 to 1980 healthy men in their 50s, 60s, 70s and today. There are some notable exceptions. However, many people start, the long-term viability of today's professional bodybuilders question of whothe use of testosterone, growth hormone, insulin and other compounds, the athletes of yesteryear had never heard of it. Only time will tell if they are happy to finish and gray as their peers from the past, or if the increased use will result in major medical problems in the future.

Paul McCartney's ballet stumbles with critics (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Paul McCartney's ballet debut writing an orchestral score and tale of love about an ocean dwelling princess received poor, early reviews on Friday that called his music agreeable but the story and staging bland.

McCartney, 69, posed for photos and fans with fiancee Nancy Shevell, 51, along with fashion designer daughter Stella McCartney and stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Naomi Watts and Alec Baldwin at a packed house at the New York City Ballet premiere held on Thursday for "Ocean's Kingdom."

But the work McCartney created with the company's ballet master-in-chief Peter Martins, who choreographed the work and admitted in media interviews the crowd was there for McCartney rather than the 50 minute-long ballet itself, was met with a mainly negative response in early reviews posted on Friday.

The New York Times said McCartney's score contained "plenty of color and melody" and was "never less than agreeable," but "in no way an important addition to the corpus of ballet music," and the show ultimately deserved better staging.

"'Ocean's Kingdom' isn't offensive: it's just harmless, forgettable, bland, thin and occasionally incompetent," the review said.

The Times blamed a "trite" scenario created by McCartney, as well as cliched costumes. Still, the reviewer believed the show could have been saved by better choreography, but failed.

"I hope someone else choreographs this score before long: it has many more dance opportunities -- especially in its finale -- than Mr. Martins has chosen to realize," the review said.

The Los Angeles Times called McCartney's score at its best a "competent Hollywood soundtrack to fairy-tale themed film," but also said it was let down by the action on stage.

Britain's The Telegraph said the music "certainly wasn't an embarrassment. A sparse string interlude was moving in its delicacy," but, noting McCartney had a hand in the story and choreography, the review added "As the lights dimmed and the dancing started, it was clear that the performance was ballet for beginners."

The former Beatle took more of a role in the ballet than most composers, working on the love story about a princess called Honorata and earthly prince as well as elements of the set, costumes by his daughter, and choreography. The production was budgeted at around $800,000.

Martins and McCartney met at the School of American Ballet's Winter Gala in 2010 and began discussing the possibility of working together on a production. It is McCartney's first time writing for any kind of music for dance, although he has written several classical albums.

McCartney has said on his website the composition work differed from writing songs as it was a more abstract exercise in expressing pure emotion "... so you have fear, love, anger, sadness to play with and I found that exciting and challenging."

He told the Huffington Post "I had no idea what the rules were or in fact if there were any, so I just went back and wrote music with dance in mind that excited me and that I thought might excite Peter."

The "Ocean's Kingdom" album will be released in October.

Drug Shows Promise Against Deadly ... - Health Nutrition and Fitness

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 21 (HealthDay News) ? An experimental drug may offer a thin ray of hope to people suffering from the rapidly fatal lung disease known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

The compound, currently known only as BIBF 1120, seems to slow the disease, decrease exacerbations and improve quality of life for patients, according to a study funded by the drug?s maker, Boehringer Ingelheim, that is published in the Sept. 22 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

?It improves the course of disease and, in my opinion, it?s the first drug to significantly ameliorate the really devastating progression of the disease,? said Dr. Norman Edelman, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association, who noted that current treatments for the disease ?are almost desperation attempts. There?s very little evidence they work.?

?The authors don?t claim [BIBF 1120] is going to reverse the disease. They claim it?s going to slow it down, but even that is a major factor,? added Dr. Hormoz Ashtyani, director of pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) involves a relentless stiffening of the lungs due to overproduction of collagen, the ?cement? that holds lung tissue together, explained Ashtyani.

Patients with IPF usually die within two to three years of diagnosis. While the disease used to be considered relatively rare, Edelman noted that doctors have been noticing an uptick in recent years, especially among older men.

One reason researchers consider BIBF 1120 so promising is because it is ?biologically plausible,? said Edelman, who is also a professor of medicine at Stony Brook University in New York.

The drug inhibits tyrosine kinase receptors that are known to promote fibrosis, or lung scarring, and was successful in doing just that in an earlier study involving rats.

?It?s not a shot in the dark. The biology of this kind of molecule makes sense to use in this disease,? Edelman said.

In this randomized, controlled, phase 2 trial, researchers compared four different doses of BIBF 1120 ? 50 milligrams (mg), 100 mg, 200 mg or 300 mg a day ? with a placebo in 432 patients.

At the end of a year, patients receiving the highest dose of BIBF 1120 saw their lung function improve by more than two-thirds. They also experienced fewer exacerbations.

There were also some improvements in the 200-mg group.

Unfortunately, some patients taking the highest dose did drop out of the study because of gastrointestinal side effects, as well as liver problems.

The study was not specifically designed to look at mortality, said study author Dr. Luca Richeldi, director of the Center for Rare Lung Diseases at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Policlinico Hospital in Italy, but there were fewer deaths due to respiratory causes in both the 200-mg and 300-mg groups compared with placebo. Overall, however, there was no difference in mortality between the two groups.

Two phase 3 trials on BIBF 1120 are currently underway, with results expected in the first half of 2014, said Richeldi.

?It will be interesting to see how this turns out in [further] clinical trials,? said Dr. Len Horovitz, a pulmonary specialist with Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Yao Ming, Branson join to fight shark fin trade (AP)

SHANGHAI ? Recently retired Chinese NBA star Yao Ming is taking the fight against eating shark fins back to his homeland, where demand for the traditional delicacy is soaring despite efforts to ban their use and trade.

Yao and British tycoon Richard Branson made an appeal Thursday in Shanghai against eating shark fins, which are a staple of high-class Chinese banquets, to a group of 30 of China's richest and most influential businesspeople.

"When demand happens, the buying happens and the killing happens," said Yao, a 7-foot-6 (2.29-meter) former center who retired in July after eight seasons with the Houston Rockets due to injuries.

Shanghai-born Yao is using his post-retirement free time to help campaign against the slaughter of 1.5 million sharks a week that is taking some of the species close to extinction.

The event, sponsored by the conservation group WildAid, is aimed at starting a conservation movement in China "not just to protect the sharks but to protect tigers, and to protect other species that are in peril of extinction," Branson said.

Critics say fishermen kill more than 70 million sharks each year for their fins, which can sell for $700 a pound (450 grams), while the soup can cost $80 a bowl. Usually, the fins are cut from the sharks and their bodies discarded, leaving them to die.

Although there have been moves to ban the trade and consumption of shark fins in California and elsewhere, 95 percent are consumed in China.

"There's been a massive increase in shark fin soup and the killing of sharks," said Branson, whose Virgin Airlines bans transport of shark fins. "The world is getting wealthier, particularly in China people are getting wealthier, and they can now afford to buy shark fin soup."

"We're trying to get other businesses to ban the transportation of shark fins," he said.

While shark fins have been used to make soup for hundreds of years, until recently consumption was limited to a small elite, said Yao, who gave up eating shark fin in 2006 and says he avoids events where it is served.

About 20 countries and regions have imposed regulations on finning or commercial shark fishing. Earlier this month, California imposed a ban on the trade. China regulates dealings in and harvesting of sharks but has not banned it.

"As far as shark finning is concerned the best way is to ... ban altogether shark fin soup from states and then countries. That's perhaps the only way to save the shark in the long term," Branson said.

XMRV, related viruses not confirmed in blood of healthy donors or chronic fatigue syndrome patients

ScienceDaily (Sep. 22, 2011) ? A study supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services could not validate or confirm previous research findings that suggested the presence of one of several viruses in blood samples of people living with chronic fatigue syndrome. The new study also could not find the viruses in blood samples of healthy donors who were previously known to not have the viruses.

The HHS-supported study examined the validity of testing techniques intended to detect the presence of several viruses, xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV) or related polytropic murine leukemia viruses (P-MLVs). Such follow-up studies are standard in science to determine whether earlier findings are accurate. The new findings suggest earlier results may have resulted from laboratory error, either contamination or false positive test results.

The initial reports of a link between XMRV and chronic fatigue syndrome prompted HHS to investigate how well tests detect XMRV/P-MLVs, and the prevalence and potential transmission of these viruses in the blood supply. If the viruses had been proven to be present in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome or healthy donors, concerns were raised that these viruses could put the blood supply at risk. The new results were published online on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 in Science Express.

"The results of this study, along with other recent findings, reassure us that these viruses do not pose a threat to the safety of the nation's blood supply," said Susan B. Shurin, M.D., acting director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health. "These data add to the mounting evidence that there is no need to screen blood donors for them at the present time."

In the new study, blood samples were taken from healthy donors and from 14 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome who had previously tested positive for XMRV or P-MLV, and samples from another person who had tested positive for XMRV but who did not have chronic fatigue syndrome. The study also used blood samples from healthy volunteers whose blood tests previously had shown no signs of XMRV/P-MLV.

The samples were blinded with no indication as to their source, and sent to nine laboratories. The study involved laboratories supported by several HHS agencies along with Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, Ill., GenProbe Inc., San Diego, and the Whittemore Peterson Institute (WPI), Reno, Nev.

The nine laboratories tested identical sets of the new blood samples for the XMRV/P-MLV nucleic acid, for replication of the virus (whether it reproduced itself in cells), and for antibodies to the viruses. Two labs, which previously had reported the association of XMRV with chronic fatigue syndrome, reported the presence of XMRV for some samples. However, the labs reported similar rates of finding XMRV in samples from patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and from healthy donors who were known to not have XMRV. Additional tests run in the same and other laboratories on the same samples did not find XMRV, strongly suggesting that these persons were negative for XMRV/ P-MLVs. This would be a sign that the few observed positive results represented false positives -- that is, the results indicated the condition was present when it actually was not.

To investigate the validity of testing techniques and to determine XMRV's potential impact on the blood supply, HHS formed the Blood XMRV Scientific Research Working Group in December 2009. The NHLBI leads the working group, which includes other HHS agencies including the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, NIH's National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the NIH Clinical Center, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration. The current study is based on the working group's efforts to determine the best way to test blood samples for the virus.

Researchers used 11 nucleic acid, five antibody, and three culture assays to determine the assays' abilities to detect XMRV/P-MLVs. The study also checked for evidence of contamination with mouse DNA, because XMRV or its predecessors may be present in some mouse strains and cell lines.

In 2009, WPI researchers had reported a possible link between XMRV and chronic fatigue syndrome. In June 2010, the AABB, a nonprofit U.S. blood banking association, recommended that collection centers discourage people with chronic fatigue syndrome from donating blood.

However, within the last year, evidence emerged suggesting that contamination in the laboratory was potentially responsible for detection of XMRV in some blood samples from patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. To ensure that this did not compromise results in the new study, extensive efforts were undertaken to avoid laboratory contamination and contamination of samples.

The Blood Systems Research Institute, San Francisco, including Graham Simmons, Ph. D., the paper's lead author, compiled the blood samples and distributed them to participating laboratories. The following labs and investigators were responsible for testing the sample panels:

  • Abbott (Two labs: Molecular Laboratory and Diagnostic Laboratory) -- John Hackett Jr., Ning Tang
  • CDC -- William M. Switzer, Walid Heneine
  • FDA -- Indira K. Hewlett, Jiangqin Zhao
  • FDA -- Shyh-Ching Lo/ Harvey Alter, NIH Clinical Center, Bethesda, Md.
  • Gen-Probe, Inc. -- Jeffrey M. Linnen, Kui Gao
  • NCI -- Mary F. Kearney/John M. Coffin, Tufts University, Boston
  • NCI -- Francis W. Ruscetti
  • WPI -- Judy A. Mikovits, Max A. Pfost

W. Ian Lipkin, M.D., of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, is currently leading a separate study that is testing fresh blood samples from 150 people living with chronic fatigue syndrome and 150 similar but healthy people. Through this effort, organizers will process, blind, and send samples to laboratories at the FDA, the CDC, and the WPI for testing for the presence of XMRV, MLV or related viruses.

If one of the participating laboratories finds that a sample is virus positive, further tests will be conducted to determine the validity of the result. If one participating laboratory finds a positive sample but another laboratory does not, the same samples can be shipped again, with a new blinded code, to be retested. It is hoped that the results from this study will be available by the end of 2011.

The Issues With Socially Responsible Investing - CBS MoneyWatch ...

Socially responsible investing (SRI) has been referred to as ?double-bottom-line? investing. The implication is that you?re seeking not only profitable investments, but also investments that meet your personal standards. For instance, some investors don?t want to support companies that sell tobacco products or rely on animal testing. Of course, not everyone has the same set of beliefs, so SRI can mean different things to different people.

According to the Social Investment Forum, total SRI assets in the United States rose from $639 billion in 1995 to $3.07 trillion at the start of 2010. Clearly investors believe in SRI. One question for investors in SRI funds is: Is there a price to pay for avoiding ?sin stocks??

Expenses
To answer the question, we begin by considering that SRI funds are typically more expensive than index funds and passive funds in general. One reason is that they incur the extra costs of screening out the undesirables. Those extra costs hurt returns.

Diversification
SRI investors also typically sacrifice diversification. SRI funds typically are domestic and large cap. Thus, investors sacrifice exposure to small-cap and value stocks, and perhaps international and emerging market stocks as well. They also then lose exposure to the higher expected returns provided by small-cap, value and emerging market stocks.

SRI investors also may be accepting other risks. Because they avoid investing is ?sin? stocks, they?re not fully diversified across industries.

Cost of Capital
There?s one other important point to consider. Economic theory tells us that because there are $3 trillion of SRI investments that avoid ?sin? stocks, the cost of capital of sin stocks is driven higher than it would otherwise be, and the cost of capital of the non-sin stocks is driven lower. In other words, by avoiding investing in sin stocks, investors make those stocks cheaper (smaller and more value-oriented). And since the flip side of the cost of capital is the expected return to investors, SRI investors are missing out on the higher expected returns of ?sin? stocks.

The authors of the study, ?The Price of Sin: The Effects of Social Norms on Markets,? provide evidence that the hypothesis that there?s a societal norm against investing in ?sin? stocks is correct, and that it does impact the cost of capital. The following is a summary of the findings:

  • When compared to stocks of otherwise comparable characteristics, sin stocks have less institutional ownership ? approximately 18 percent lower institutional ownership than comparable stocks (23 percent versus 28 percent).
  • Sin stocks receive 21 percent less analyst coverage.
  • Sin stocks are less held by norm-constrained institutions such as pension plans as compared to mutual or hedge funds that are natural arbitrageurs.
  • The prices of sin stocks are relatively depressed, and, therefore, have higher expected returns than otherwise comparable stocks ? consistent with them being neglected by norm-constrained investors and facing greater litigation risk (e.g., tobacco stocks) heightened by social norms.
  • For the period 1965-2006, a portfolio long sin stocks and short their comparables has a return of 29 basis points per month after adjusting for a four-factor model comprising of the three Fama-French factors and the momentum factor. The statistics are economically significant. And just looking at a portfolio long sin stocks would yield even more significant out-performance of sin stocks relative to these benchmarks.
  • The market-to-book ratios of sin stocks are on average about 15 percent lower than those of other comparable companies. These valuation ratios, using a Gordon growth model calibration, imply excess returns of about 2 percent a year.
  • As out of sample support, sin stocks in seven large European markets and Canada outperform similar stocks by about 2.5 percent a year.

The conclusion we can draw from this study is that social norms have important consequences in for the cost of capital of sin companies. They also have consequences for investors who pay a price in the form of lower expected returns and less effective diversification.

While many investors will vote ?conscious? over ?pocketbook,? there?s an alternative to socially responsible investing that?s at least worth considering: Avoid socially responsible funds and donate the higher expected returns to the charities that you are most passionate about. In that way, you can directly impact the causes you care most about and get a tax deduction at the same time!

Monday Music Video: A Biochemical Cover of a Tune from Wicked!

The internet is full of re-jigged tunes where people force a narrative of scientific concepts into a recognizable song. We all know many of these can be painful to listen to (or watch if it is in video format).

But today, I have one so well done, I can watch it over and over. I?ll admit it is more enjoyable in that I?ve taken my fair share of biochemistry.

Ben needed to prove he knew about enzymatic inhibition which he couldn?t do on his midterm exam, so he wrote clever, catchy lyrics to the ?Popular? song from the musical ?Wicked?. To top it off, he can actually sing!

By the way, I get asked a lot by students which courses to take to be a great biologist. One of my top suggestions is biochemistry. Eminently worthwhile.

My favorite verse:

?Now I must begin
Competitive Inhibition
Substrate and inhibitor fight
For the active site
Apparent Km turns out high
Now we know we can kiss that free energy change goodbye.?

Singing begins 2 minutes in, with lyrics provided below!

Lyrics provided by Ben himself:
[Inhibition! ...To the tune of Popular]

When I studied for the midterm I?d forgotten to address
The topic that I skimmed through and bombed it on the test
I see it and my tender heart still cries

Then Professor Villa said there?d be
An extra opportunity
To show we?d learn that topic if we tried
Now this I must admit
I?d underestimated it a bit
That topic that I?d failed so to define
I?ve opened my mind to learn the
Nature of In-

Hibitors! Enzymatic inhibitors
Counted there?re three different kinds
That reversibly bind
And the irreversables
Resemblance of most substrates
React at slower rates
Some don?t even react at all

Now I must begin
Competitive Inhibition
Substrate and inhibitor fight
For the active site
Apparent Km turns out high
Now we know we can kiss that free energy change goodbye

But also know apparent Vmax doesn?t change
Substrate concentrations overcome at higher range
Unlike the uncompetatives that come out strange
Because it?s slower, Apparent Km?s lower
Now let us see mechanisms
For uncompetitive inhibitions

Inhibitor never wins
If substrate?s not in
The E-S complex like we hear, well, heard
Km over Alpha prime goes
Up through rule Le Chatlier, er
La la, It works great, La la, With more substrate
Which makes the product fail to make

Inhibition mixed you?ll see ones
Move in either or directions
Binds to enzyme-substrate complex
Or free enzymes, Raising up apparent Kms
While apparent Vmax drops happen to them
Is that not suicidal
That can?t be right

That?s irreversible! Please!
Irreversible inhibitors
They never come out the same
Cause they chemically change
Never changing back you?ll see
Forever it inhibits the enzyme activity-
Because irreversible inhibitors permanently bind to or damage essential functional groups and may also form a stable noncovalent complex with the enzyme, inhibition cannot therefore be reversed inhibiting most or all binding of the substrate so that the final product will never form which I won?t go into because there was only one slide on irreversible inhibitors and I just said everything that was on there.

It was so much fun
Learning inhibition
I know now not to cram
I?m gonna mind and grind it
When comes the final day?s exam

La la la la, Biochemistry
Just got way less complicated to me!

Scientists find way to "disarm" AIDS virus (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Scientists have found a way to prevent HIV from damaging the immune system and say their discovery may offer a new approach to developing a vaccine against AIDS.

Researchers from the United States and Europe working in laboratories on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) found it is unable to damage the immune system if cholesterol is removed from the virus's membrane.

"It's like an army that has lost its weapons but still has flags, so another army can recognize it and attack it," said Adriano Boasso of Imperial College London, who led the study.

The team now plans to investigate how to use this way of inactivating the virus and possibly develop it into a vaccine.

Usually when a person becomes infected with HIV, the body's innate immune response puts up an immediate defense. But some researchers believe HIV causes the innate immune system to overreact. This weakens the immune system's next line of defense, known as the adaptive immune response.

For this study -- published on Monday in the journal Blood -- Boasso's team removed cholesterol from the membrane around the virus and found that this stopped HIV from triggering the innate immune response. This in turn led to a stronger adaptive response, orchestrated by a type of immune cells called T cells.

AIDS kills around 1.8 million people a year worldwide. An estimated 2.6 million people caught HIV in 2009, and 33.3 million people are living with the virus.

Major producers of current HIV drugs include Gilead Bristol Myers Squibb, Merck, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline.

Scientists from companies, non-profits and governments around the world have been trying for many years to make a vaccine against HIV but have so far had only limited success.

A 2009 study in Thailand involving 16,000 volunteers showed for the first time that a vaccine could prevent HIV infection in a small number of people, but since the efficacy was only around 30 percent researchers were forced back to the drawing board.

An American team working on an experimental HIV vaccine said in May that it helped monkeys with a form of the AIDS virus control the infection for more than a year, suggesting it may lead to a vaccine for people.

HIV is spread in many ways -- during sex, on needles shared by drug users, in breast milk and in blood -- so there is no single easy way to prevent infection. The virus also mutates quickly and can hide from the immune system, and attacks the very cells sent to battle it.

"HIV is very sneaky," Boasso said in a statement. "It evades the host's defenses by triggering overblown responses that damage the immune system. It's like revving your car in first gear for too long -- eventually the engine blows out.

He said this may be why developing a vaccine has proven so tricky. "Most vaccines prime the adaptive response to recognize the invader, but it's hard for this to work if the virus triggers other mechanisms that weaken the adaptive response."

HIV takes its membrane from the cell that it infects, the researchers explained in their study. This membrane contains cholesterol, which helps keep it fluid and enables it to interact with particular types of cell.

Normally, a subset of immune cells called plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) recognize HIV quickly and react by producing signaling molecules called interferons. These signals activate various processes which are initially helpful, but which damage the immune system if switched on for too long.

Working with scientists Johns Hopkins University, the University of Milan and Innsbruck University, Boasso's team found that if cholesterol is removed from HIV's envelope, it can no longer activate pDCs. As a result, T cells, which orchestrate the adaptive response, can fight the virus more effectively.

Palestinians to seek UN membership (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is pressing ahead Tuesday with his diplomatic campaign to gain full U.N. membership, as the divisive issue of Palestinian statehood takes center stage ahead of the opening of the U.N. General Assembly session.

Abbas had meetings scheduled with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, among leaders, as he sought to line up support ahead of his speech Friday to the General Assembly when the Palestinians vow to submit a letter formally requesting U.N. membership.

Envoys of the Quartet of Mideast mediators ? the U.S., the U.N., the European Union and Russia ? planned to meet again Tuesday in an effort to avert a showdown over Palestinian statehood by crafting a way forward that would be enough to persuade the Palestinians to drop their bid and have enough caveats for Israel to get its support.

As the Palestinians edged closer to seeking statehood recognition from the United Nations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Abbas to meet with him in New York. The Israel leader said he wanted to resume peace talks, upping the pressure on Abbas and building on the frenzied diplomacy swirling around the Palestinians' bid.

While any submission by the Palestinians wait weeks or months for the U.N. action, it has Mideast mediators scrambling to find a way to draw the two sides back to a negotiating table.

Regardless, Abbas said he had not been swayed by what he called "tremendous pressure" to drop the bid for U.N. recognition and instead to resume peace talks with Israel. Senior aides to the Palestinian leader said Abbas was undaunted by threats of punitive measures.

"Abbas says to every one: it's enough, 20 years of negotiations are more than enough, the world should intervene and end the Israeli occupation as long as the USA can't," said Mohammed Ishtayeh, an Abbas aide.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said, however, there was still time to find a solution to the diplomatic crisis.

Clinton told reporters in New York that the U.S. is talking with all sides to defuse the standoff, noting that there were still several days to seek a compromise before Abbas' speech.

She joined Netanyahu in calling for new talks and repeated the U.S. position that the only path to a separate state for Palestinians is through negotiations with Israel.

Nabil Shaath, senior aide to Abbas, told The Associated Press that the Palestinian leader informed U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during their meeting Monday that he would present him with a letter requesting full membership on Friday, ahead of Abbas' speech to the General Assembly.

Any candidate for U.N. membership must submit a letter to the secretary-general stating it is a "peace-loving" state and accepts the U.N. Charter. Ban is expected to examine the Palestinian letter and then send it to the 15-member U.N. Security Council, which must give its approval before a vote in the larger General Assembly.

Ishtayeh said the letter will state: "Palestine is a peace-loving state and has contributed to human civilization, that it has succeeded in building state institutions." It would also cite the need to consider the pre-1967 Mideast War borders as those of the Palestinian state, he said.

Although any submission by the Palestinians could wait weeks or months for U.N. action, it has sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity with Mideast mediators scrambling to find a way to draw the sides back to the negotiating table.

Shaath said last ditch efforts to dissuade the Palestinian president from approaching the Security Council had failed. He said Palestinians had been threatened with harsh punitive measures but had decided to move ahead nonetheless.

The comment appeared to refer to the warnings by some in the U.S. Congress that current and future financial aid to the Palestinian Authority could be in jeopardy if they move ahead with the membership bid. The U.S. gives some $500 million a year in aid to the Palestinians.

Israel has not said how it will respond to a Palestinian declaration of independence, though hardliners in Netanyahu's government have called for a variety of measures, including annexing parts or all of the West Bank or withholding tax funds that Israel collects on behalf of the Palestinians.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said that by going to the U.N., the Palestinians are violating "the spirit and the word of signed commitments" that pledged to resolve disagreements through negotiations. "Israel reserves the right to respond," he said Tuesday, refusing to elaborate.

Each side in on-again-off-again Israeli-Palestinian talks has accused the other of being an untrustworthy and intransigent participant in the peace process.

In a statement issued late Monday, Netanyahu called on Abbas to begin "direct negotiations in New York and continue them in Jerusalem and Ramallah." It provided no other details or indications that Netanyahu was willing to cede to any of the Palestinians' demands.

Ban "reiterated his support for the two-state solution and stressed his desire to ensure that the international community and the two parties can find a way forward for resuming negotiations within a legitimate and balanced framework," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said after the secretary-general met with Abbas.

The comment underscored the desires of some members of the Quartet of Mideast mediators that Palestinian statehood should not be granted before a resumption of peace talks. While the four international mediators have repeatedly called for renewed negotiations, Russia supports U.N. membership for Palestine.

The long-stalled negotiations have been unable to solve key issues including Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and the status of east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as their capital. Israel captured both areas in the 1967 Mideast war.

Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed at a Monday night meeting that the Quartet envoys should meet again for the third straight day on Tuesday, officials said.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic work, said progress was being made on a joint Quartet statement that would include a modest upgrade to Palestinian status at the U.N., address Israel's demand that it be recognized as a Jewish state, and set a broad timeline for renewed negotiations.

The timeframe wouldn't be a deadline, as such, but would be aimed at addressing the Palestinian desire to see quick action. The offer would come with an unchanged message that Washington would veto the Palestinian bid at the Security Council for U.N. membership, but at the very least it would represent a dignity-saving compromise for Abbas' U.S.-backed government.

By already promising a veto in the Security Council, the U.S. has blocked that course for the Palestinians before they even submit the request.

Alternatively, the Palestinians could seek the approval of a majority of the General Assembly's 193 member states to upgrade their status from a permanent observer to a nonmember observer state ? a designation that would leave them with a symbolic victory despite years of failed negotiations and waning hopes for statehood.

In either scenario, the Palestinians will have shown they have the power to force action on the issue at a time when Israel is feeling increasingly isolated in the region.
