Video: Zimmerman?s past brush with law enforcement

>>> the shooting death of trayvon martin. tonight, new information has come into light about the shooter, george zimmerman , specifically his behavior in a previous run-in with the law. we get the exclusive details from our national investigative correspondent michael isakov from sanford, florida.

>> when george zimmerman was questioned by police after the trayvon martin shooting, it wasn't the first time he had been in custody. in july 2005 , he was arrested in orlando for resisting a florida law enforcement officer and obstructing justice. this police report obtained by nbc news states he used violence and battery upon the officer. the lead prosecutor on the case said today zimmerman could have been charged with a felony.

>> i have seen people charged with less conduct than mr. zimmerman is alleged to have done that night at the bar.

>> the incident took place at this college bar where an undercover alcohol control officer was arresting several employees for serving alcohol to minors. they showed their badge and asked zimmerman to leave the area. i don't care who you are, he said. after being asked to leave again, he said, f-you. the felony charges were reduced to a misdemeanor, and the court ordered him into anger management classes.

>> the program recognizes that sometimes people get arrested and they're not bad people , they're people who made a mistake.

>> florida officials said if he had been convicted of a felony as originally charges in 2005 , he wouldn't have been able to obtain a concealed weapons permit. zimmerman 's attorney did not return repeated calls for comment.

Click here to read Ways to Build Your Credit Score Without Credit Cards

We?ve discussed some ways to build credit without a credit card in the past, but the folks at Get Rich Slowly have a few additional suggestions, including taking out a small personal loan with a trusted bank or credit union and paying it down on time, and trying out a secured credit card that you load up with money and use like cash. Both options will build up your FICO score over time, and are great alternatives for people who don?t like or don?t trust credit cards. More??

A Basic, but Often Ignored, Rule of Investing - NYTimes.com

March 30, 2012, 4:15 pm By BUCKS EDITORS

Paul Sullivan writes this week in his Wealth Matters column this week about a basic rule in investing that many people don?t heed ? ?past performance is no indication of future results.?

How often does word get out about a particular fund?s stellar performance? Investors pile in. But what happens when the fund goes down? Is that only temporary or a portent of a deeper decline? What should investors do?

A new report from Barclays Wealth and Investment Management takes the question a step further and asks whether investors can identify fund managers who are going to do well in the future. If not, the report concludes, investors should be in an index fund or with a firm that can identify the managers with potential.

One of the authors of the report, David Romhilt, the head of manager research and selection at Barclays, said active managers generally went through four phases: start-up, growth, maturity and decline. He told Mr. Sullivan that he tried to identify the manager?s growth phase, where they?ve had some success but not so much that money has poured in and changed how they invest.

What do you think of this advice? Have you fallen victim to the idea that the past predicts the future? Tell us about your experiences in the comment section below.

PHILADELPHIA - A new animal model of nerve injury has brought to light a critical role of an enzyme called Nmnat in nerve fiber maintenance and neuroprotection. Understanding biological pathways involved in maintaining healthy nerves and clearing away damaged ones may offer scientists targets for drugs to mitigate neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's and Parkinson's, as well as aid in situations of acute nerve damage, such as spinal cord injury.

University of Pennsylvanian biologists developed the model in the adult fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster.

"We are using the basic power of the fly to learn about how neurons are damaged in acute injury situations," said Nancy Bonini, senior author of the research and a professor in the Department of Biology at Penn. "Our work indicates that Nmnat may be key."

The research was published in Current Biology. First author on the study is postdoctoral researcher Yanshan Fang, with additional contributions from postdoctoral researcher Lorena Soares and research technicians Xiuyin Teng and Melissa Geary, all of Penn's Department of Biology.

When a nerve suffers an acute injury -- as might be caused by a penetrating wound, for example, or a broken bone that damages nearby tissues -- the long projection of the nerve cell, called the axon, can become injured and degenerate. The process by which it disintegrates is known as Wallerian or Wallerian-like degeneration and is an active, orderly process.

Though this function of eliminating damaged nerve cells is crucial, biologists do not have a clear understanding of all of the molecular signaling pathways that govern the process.

Bonini's lab has previously focused on chronic neurodegenerative diseases but made this foray into acute nerve injury to determine if mechanistic overlaps exist between acute axon injury and chronic neurodegeneration. They first searched for an appropriate nerve tract to target and identified the wing of adult flies as a prime option.

The fly wing is not only translucent and a site of lengthy nerve fibers that can be easily observed, but it can also be cut to cause injury without killing the fly. That way, the researchers can follow the animal's response to nerve injury for weeks.

Using various reagents to manipulate the fly's genetic traits, the team confirmed that the cut wing nerve underwent Wallerian degeneration. They then tested versions of Nmnat and another protein called WldS, all of which had previously been shown to protect nerves from degeneration, to see if any of these might stop the process. All significantly delayed neurodegeneration. Even a form of Nmnat that hadn't worked in other animal models suppressed degeneration, although to a lesser extent.

"That indicates that our assay is really sensitive," Bonini said. "This sensitivity could help us identify genes that have moderate although important functionality at protecting against nerve degeneration."

Their investigations into the wing nerve also showed that the degenerating axon "died back," fragmenting first from the axon terminals, the side farthest from the nerve cell bodya pattern similar to what has been seen in other disorders.

Doing more genetic tinkering, the researchers showed that when the animal's own Nmnat was depleted, the nerves fragmented in the same way as if the axon was physically cut. And when Nmnat and the other "rescue" proteins were added back to these genetically modified flies, they were able to block degeneration, highlighting that Nmnat is critical to maintaining healthy axons.

In a final set of experiments, the biologists sought to narrow where in the nerve cells Nmnat might be working. They focused on mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells. When they created a genetic line of flies that blocked mitochondria from entering the axon fibers, the nerve tract degenerated, again, in a dying-back fashion. Yet now WldS and Nmnat failed to prevent axon degeneration, suggesting that those proteins may act on and require the presence of axonal mitochondria to maintain healthy nerves in normal flies.

Flipping that scenario around, they looked to see what happened to the mitochondria of flies upon nerve injury. When they cut the wing nerve axons, the mitochondria rapidly disappeared. Yet they can largely preserve the mitochrondria by increasing expression of Nmnat.

Their results, taken together with the findings of other studies, suggest that Nmnat may stabilize mitochondria in some way in order to keep axons in a healthy state.

"We have some hope that these proteins or their activity may someday serve as drug targets or could provide the foundation for a therapeutic advance," Bonini said. "But right now, my hope is that the power of the fly model will open up a lot of new directions of research and new pathways that could be targets for development in the future."

Buckeyes rally after being booted from practice

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Ohio State coach Thad Matta had seen enough, so he called off practice.

Senior William Buford wouldn't let them quit. We're sticking around, finishing this ? with or without coach.

"We needed to stay together and show coach that we really wanted to be here," Buford said on Thursday.

They sure did.

Sparked by that we'll-show-coach moment of solidarity and buoyed by a refresher-course team meeting, the Buckeyes have made an unexpected run into the Final Four.

Following a loss to Wisconsin the day after Matta's outburst, Ohio State (31-7) has won eight of nine games and is playing its best basketball at just the right time.

The young Buckeyes face Kansas in Saturday's Final Four matchup in the Big Easy and have found the confidence that was missing during an ugly stretch in February that had Matta wondering if his team could even get past the first round of the NCAA tournament.

"There was a lot of finger-pointing going around. There was some adversity; we weren't playing as well as we thought we should be," point guard Aaron Craft said. "There were guys just not taking responsibility for their actions, and he tried to kick us out. I think we did a good job of fighting back. Since the last week of the season, it's been a better team mind-set, and we've dealt with adversity a lot better."

The Buckeyes opened the season with some decent expectations thanks to Jared Sullinger's decision to return for his sophomore season. Still, they were young and inexperienced, with 11 underclassmen on the roster, leaving Matta unsure of where the team was headed.

Ohio State was a smooth-shifting machine early in the season, playing with poise and efficiency while getting scoring from Sullinger and Buford and steady play from Craft at the point.

Ohio State's only losses were on the road to Kansas ? without Sullinger ? Indiana and Illinois, and it had moved up to third in the rankings.

Then, the Buckeyes seemed to get discombobulated.

Sullinger started complaining about the way officials were calling games and seemed bothered by teams playing physical defense. The entire team became more selfish, sometimes not even knowing what play was being run or where to be on the court.

In position to take a two-game lead in the Big Ten with six left on Feb. 11, the Buckeyes labored in a 58-48 loss to Michigan State, shooting 26 percent while scoring 29 points below their average to see a 39-game home winning streak end.

The Buckeyes bounced back with a road win against Minnesota, but followed with a 56-51 loss at Michigan and still seemed to be in a funk despite beating Illinois.

Facing a huge game against Wisconsin the next day, one that could determine the Big Ten championship, the Buckeyes should have been focused and ready for an intense practice on Feb. 25.

Instead, they labored through it, prompting their coach to blow his stack and tell them to go home.

It was a big risk with a crucial game the next day, but Matta couldn't sit around and watch his team fritter away what he thought could be a good season.

"We've always tried to set the stage of how we practice is how we play ? at high speed, we don't stop. It takes guys a little longer to get the intensity and what we're trying to get," Matta said. "And it took this team took a little while to understand."

The Buckeyes stumbled after Matta's gamble, losing to Wisconsin 63-60 the next day. They rallied after that, though.

Sullinger, who had just eight points and six rebounds against Wisconsin, shook off his midseason funk and concentrated just on his game, not outside influences like officials or what people were saying about him.

Deshaun Thomas, Ohio State's second-leading scorer in the regular season, picked up his output in the NCAA tournament, leading the Buckeyes with 21.8 points per game while giving the Buckeyes' a tough, who-do-you-stop combination with Sullinger.

Overall, the Buckeyes played more as a team, regained some of their early season swagger and found a way to deal with adversity when it comes up instead of backing down from it.

"Even though we lost the game the next day, maybe it opened their eyes to maybe what the coaches are telling us is true, that the way we play games is the way we practice," Matta said. "Unfortunately, we had to take a home loss for it, but maybe it helped us in the end."

The Buckeyes got an opportunity to show how far they had come after a win over Loyola of Maryland to open the NCAA tournament.

Ohio State rolled to a 19-point victory, but it was chalked up to the Buckeyes being bigger, faster and stronger than Loyola, not because the team was playing well.

The players, fortified with their new sense of purpose, had that it-could-have-been-better feeling, too, so they decided to hold a team meeting before their next game against Gonzaga.

Gathered in a Pittsburgh hotel room, they talked about focus, not taking anything for granted, communicating better, playing more as a team instead of individuals ? a players-led refresher course of many of the same things Matta stressed after his get-out-of-my-sight move.

The players' meeting only lasted 10 minutes or so, but, like their coach's practice toss, the message made it through.

The next day, Ohio State fought through Sullinger's early foul trouble for a 73-66 victory over Gonzaga, earning a trip to the East Regional in Boston.

Once there, the Buckeyes held their composure after blowing a 12-point lead against cross-state rival Cincinnati, then knocked off top-seeded Syracuse to reach the Final Four for the second time since 2007, when Greg Oden led them to the national title game.

"We knew we had a chance to do something special, so we just wanted to try to keep our guys together," Buford said of the meeting. "We let everybody know that we need each other and that we needed to keep uplifting each other and help each other out."

Their season once on the brink of collapse, the Buckeyes are two wins from their first national championship in 52 years.

US suspends food aid to North Korea over rocket

By msnbc.com news services

WASHINGTON -- North Korea has added sophisticated cyber attack capabilities to its arsenal of threatening weapons and this year is rife with opportunities for military provocations from Pyongyang, senior U.S. defense officials said on Wednesday.

The officials told the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee that North Korea's large conventional military, nuclear weapons programs, ballistic missiles and newer capabilities in cyber warfare were all threats to the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region.

Army Gen. James Thurman, the commander of U.S. Forces Korea, told the panel that a skilled team of hackers was the newest addition to North Korea's arsenal of weapons that also includes chemical and biological weapons.

"Such attacks are ideal for North Korea, providing the regime a means to attack South Korean and U.S. interests without attribution, and have been increasingly employed against a variety of targets including military, governmental, educational and commercial institutions," he said in prepared comments.

Thurman, who leads the 28,000 U.S. troops in South Korea, told the panel that the power transfer following the death in December of leader Kim Jong Il "appears to be proceeding without discernible internal challenges and with significant Chinese political and economic support."

Kim's untested son, Kim Jong Un, estimated to be 28 years old, has eased into power surrounded by allies of his father with so far "no indications the regime will depart significantly from Kim Jong Il's policies," said Thurman.

Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific Security Affairs, told the panel the potential for provocations from North Korea in 2012 was a "major concern" of the Pentagon.

From the U.S. perspective, the first provocation will be a North Korean ballistic missile launch slated for between April 12-16. But South Korean elections in April and December might also tempt Pyongyang to take actions to influence Seoul's domestic politics, he said.

Pyongyang says the rocket to be launched to mark what would have been the 100th birthday of deceased state founder Kim Il Sung will carry a weather satellite into orbit. But most outsiders say it is a disguised test of a long-range missile that violates key U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban any such launches.

Food aid suspended
"This planned launch is highly provocative because it manifests North Korea's desire to test and expand its long-range missile capability," said Lavoy. He said the announcement of the launch also broke a missile moratorium North Korea agreed to on Feb. 29 with Washington in exchange for food aid.

According to the BBC, Lavoy said next month's planned rocket launch "reflects [North Korea's] lack of desire to follow through on their international commitments and so we've been forced to suspend our activities to provide nutritional assistance."

The US has not delivered food aid to North Korea since 2009, BBC reported, but it sent officials to the country's ally China earlier this month to finalize plans for renewed food deliveries totaling 240,000 tons.

North Korea relies on foreign aid to feed its people, BBC reported. The country has been struggling with food shortages since a famine in the 1990s.

Many of North Korea's neighbors are concerned about next month's launch of a rocket, which North Korea has said would travel southward toward the Philippines or Indonesia, said Lavoy.

"I don't know if we have any confidence on the stability of the missile or what the impact will be," he said.

The missile launch next month has put on hold diplomatic efforts to coax North Korea back into talks over its nuclear weapons programs that have been frozen for three years.

Pyongyang often shifts tactics between diplomacy and confrontation, said Thurman.

"History tells us that Pyongyang will shift from diplomatic to provocative behavior when conventional diplomacy has run its course and the North Korean leadership perceives coercive diplomacy offers a better chance to realize its objectives," he said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

I'm curious to know what you're looking for and what is acceptable for a character. When you say mythical creatures, do you mean like werewolves and dragons or like vampires and ghosts (or perhaps all of it)?

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances... Some are just much better than others.

Elliptical Vs Fitness treadmill machine ? Which Exercise equipment ...

Recent studies show that more than 60% of our population is over weight. If you fall into of which category, you may want to chose the most effective way to get suit and to lose weight. Everyone is more apt to stick with a workout routine when they are able to elliptical vs treadmill from the relative anonymity that belongs to them home. For this reason persons decide to purchase a home health and fitness machine. The question is do i need to buy a treadmill or perhaps an elliptical trainer. This is a report on the two fitness devices and will help you to pick which the best one to buy is.

Calories Burned
The two a treadmill plus an elliptical trainer will allow you to lose weight which is the goal throughout weight lost. The volume of calories that will be burnt off is based on the intensity of your exercise as well as the length of the exercise.
Normally if you are exercising with the same level of intensity likely same amount of time on machines, an elliptical machine will burn more calories. This is due to a treadmill solely works out your reduced body when sometimes walking or managing. On the other hand, an elliptical trainer will provide the same cheaper body workout but will recieve treatment out your upper body with many arm movement throughout the exercise period.
Should you be looking for the most calories burned, a good elliptical trainer will do more than a treadmill.
Upper and Lower Body Workout
If you want to get fit you will want to improve your muscles with your workout routine. It is a snowball effect. As you workout you build muscle tissues. Muscles burn fat which will help you to lose weight. The greater you workout the more muscles you build which experts claim burns more and more fat.
As I mentioned previously, a new treadmill only ends up your lower physique. During the workout the muscles in your hip and legs improve and get more powerful. Muscles burn more fat than can the fat on your system. An elliptical machine may improve the muscles inside your arms and your legs. This gives you more benefit as the muscle tissues in both places burn up fat.
Impact on Body
Running has always stood a negative reputation a result of the impact on the joints. It is possible to minimize this impact through correct form but you will not completely eliminate the effect. Most treadmills give a cushion in their running track that provides significantly less impact on your knees as compared to running on real. This cushion helps with lowering the impact for a joints but the in order to that you still have this impact.
With an elliptical machine, there is no impact. You place your feet on the ft . pedals and exercise. You are not smashing up and down on the control pedal when exercising. An elliptical machine is an impact free of charge exercise machine. An elliptical vs treadmill will not damage your legs.
Noise Factor
Both equally machines are deafening because they both have generators. The treadmill will have slightly more noise because of the ground noise that results from the reveal of your running about the treadmill. The more pricey models of both equipment provide quite a bit of sounds dampening in the design of these products.

Football is a family tradition for CNU recruit Epps

Ben Epps never had to look very far to see his destiny.

Big brother Ricky, a three-sport athlete in high school who went on to play college football, was right there in front of him.

"I always told everybody ? I still tell everybody ? I wanted to be just like him, ever since I was little," Ben said. "We always had a ball in our hand. I didn't think there was any other option. We were going to be playing sports."

Ricky, 27, is nine years older than Ben, 18, who will take his multi-faceted talents to Christopher Newport this fall after throwing for 667 yards and rushing for 346 as a dual-threat quarterback at Isle of Wight. But the brothers have a strong bond, forged in countless hours spent throwing the football in the backyard or facing off against each other in one-on-one pickup games.

"When he was younger, with me being nine years older, it wasn't really a fair fight," said Ricky, a teacher and coach at Southampton High who, like Ben, played football, basketball and baseball in high school. "It has become more competitive now, but I still love him to death and would do anything for him."

Throughout Ricky's playing career, first at Surry Academy, then Tidewater Academy and Randolph-Macon, Ben was a constant presence in the stands. Ben's 8-year-old voice often pipes up on old game film, telling the boys' mother about a good play Ricky just made.

"Him seeing me play quarterback ? the quarterback's the captain, and he's kind of the center of attention. I think Ben liked that," Ricky said. "We both are vocal and love being leaders and stepping up and taking that role. He's got the same personality as me as far as wanting to motivate his teammates and keep them on track."

Ricky coached Ben as an Isle of Wight assistant from Ben's eighth grade year until leaving this past season for Southampton, where he teaches health and physical education and is an assistant varsity football coach, as well as the head junior varsity boys basketball coach.

"I absolutely love watching him play," said Ricky, who was a scrambler like his brother. "He's exciting to watch and he's fun to watch. Once he got to JV level, I could really see myself. It was like watching myself play. It's really kind of weird seeing him out there. He moves just like I move, just a little bit quicker."

Ben is slightly smaller than his 6-foot brother ? not that it ever stopped him.

"I tried being a receiver and running back when I was little, and quarterback ? I knew that's where I wanted to play," Ben said. "(Ricky) always told me size doesn't matter in football. You don't have to be big to play football. It doesn't matter what anyone tells you."

Ben knows he may have to prove that all over again at CNU, where he's also being looked at as a safety.

"They're probably thinking, 'He's too small to play quarterback,' but that's what people have thought my whole life," Ben said. "I might as well just go and show them what I can do."

Ben is one of several area players who will join the Captains next season, including Landstown linebacker Chris Probst, Lafayette offensive lineman Nick Kepa, Woodside linebacker Justin McFadden and New Kent running back Storm Parker, with whom Ben has already struck up a Facebook friendship.

Ben considered other schools, such as Division II Bridgewater and his brother's alma mater, but was drawn to the Captains' winning tradition and athletic facilities. It doesn't hurt that CNU is so close to home, and Ben already has envisioned the POMOCO Stadium stands full of family, including dad Hugh, also a multi-sport star in high school.

Ricky ? who says Ben is faster than he was but maintains he can still throw the ball a bit farther ? can't wait for the role reversal of being the one cheering on his little brother. He hopes football continues to teach Ben all the things he took from it, like how to work hard and be responsible.

"It's the biggest team sport," Ricky said. "It's the biggest sport where you have to come together and look out for each other. If you play selfish or just play for yourself you're not going to be successful as a team.

"Any good football program is always going to refer to themselves as a family, a group of brothers."

Ben already has a pretty good grasp of how that feels.
