Obama Gains Frosty Reputation In Washington

nytimes.com:

Mr. Obama, in general, does not go out of his way to play the glad-handing, ego-stroking presidential role. While he does sometimes offer a ride on Air Force One to a senator or member of Congress, more often than not, he keeps Congress and official Washington at arm's length, spending his down time with a small -- and shrinking -- inner circle of aides and old friends.

HBT:?No short-term deal for Fielder?

UPDATE: OK, maybe not.

Scott Boras told Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com that Prince Fielder will not consider a three-year deal:

?Not only is that inaccurate and delusional, but it seems that some people have gotten into their New Year?s Eve stash just a little bit early this year,? Boras told ESPNChicago.com on Tuesday.

?It appears some baseball people are just bored,? Boras said. ?That?s when you hear ideas like that floated.?

7:00 PM: According to what Peter Gammons of MLB Network and NESN is hearing, yes, he could:

source: For the record, Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch heard similar information a couple weeks ago. And it?s potentially a very smart strategy. There?s no clear front-runner for Fielder at the moment, but if he?s truly willing to sign a short-term deal with a high annual average salary, some interesting and unexpected teams could get involved in the bidding.

BC-FBN--Steelers-Harrison,1st Ld-Writethru, FBN

BC-FBN--Steelers-Harrison, 1st Ld-Writethru,411Steelers LB James Harrison returns to practiceAP Photo NY154, NY153, PAKS115Eds: Updates with details. With AP Photos.By WILL GRAVESAP Sports Writer

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison understands his helmet-to-helmet hit on Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy was illegal by the letter of the law.

He can also understand, grudgingly, why the NFL suspended him one game as punishment for a series of similar hits over the last three seasons.

What Harrison doesn't quite understand, however, is why the Browns haven't also been disciplined by the league for allowing McCoy to return to the game so quickly if the quarterback was in such bad shape.

"If he was hurt so bad I don't know why they let him back in ... two plays later," Harrison said. "Something should be done to them, I would think. I don't know. I got a game, what should they get?"

McCoy was escaping pressure late in the fourth quarter when he tucked the ball as if to run. Harrison, who had been in coverage, approached ready to strike. McCoy pulled up at the last second and flipped the ball to running back Montario Hardesty right before Harrison mashed McCoy with his facemask.

Harrison contended after the game that McCoy ducked. Looking at the tape he's not so sure.

"I guess he's a little shorter, who knows? I don't know," Harrison said. "When it came down to it, my helmet hit his. Oh well."

The quarterback was down on the field for several moments but was cleared by the Browns to return a few plays later ? just in time to throw a clinching end zone interception in a 14-3 Pittsburgh win.

McCoy developed concussion-like symptoms following the game and hasn't practiced since while the Browns have come under scrutiny for the way they handled the situation.

Cleveland's failure to check McCoy for a concussion led the NFL to put a certified trainer in the press box at each game to help monitor head injuries.

Harrison practiced Wednesday for the first time since the suspension. The 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year doesn't think he needs to change the way he plays to avoid further disciplinary action.

"I'm doing everything they ask me to do," Harrison said. "I've lowered my target area, that's it."

Harrison, who has lashed out at league officials in the past for their crackdown on what is considered dangerous hits, seemed more nonplussed about the suspension than previous fines.

''I'm not worried about anything," he said. "I can't forsee the future. I'm not a fortune-teller. I'm going to deal with it as it comes."

Protecting confidential data with math

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Statistical databases (SDBs) are collections of data that are used to gather and analyze information from a variety of sources. The data may be derived from sales transactions, customer files, voter registrations, medical records, employee rosters, product inventories, or other compilations of facts and figures.

Because database security requires multiple processes and controls, it presents huge security challenges to organizations. With the computerization of databases in healthcare, forensics, telecommunications, and other fields, ensuring this kind of security has become increasingly important.

In a paper recently published in the SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, authors Rudolf Ahlswede and Harout Aydinian analyze a security-control model for statistical databases.

"Providing privacy and confidentiality in SDBs is not a new issue," Aydinian points out. "Privacy interests have evolved from the very first census in the United States. Recorded protests until the mid-20th century reflect constitutional issues resulting from the requirement for U.S. residents to provide sensitive personal information. Questions on census forms about diseases, mortgage values, and other items have raised many concerns."

While such databases are very helpful in aggregating data, there is a risk that confidential information about an individual's record may be deliberately compromised. "Since such data sets also contain sensitive information, such as the disease of an individual, or the salary of an employee, it is necessary to provide security against the disclosure of confidential information," says Aydinian. "Even in cases where a user has no direct access to sensitive information, sometimes confidential data about an individual can be inferred by correlating enough statistics."

Typically, statistical databases are designed to only accept queries that involve specific statistical functions (such as sum, average, count, min, max, etc.). However, the use of these queries may render databases susceptible to compromise. For instance, it may be possible to infer information about specific individuals by putting together data from a sequence of statistical queries, using prior knowledge of an individual, or through collusion among users.

An SDB is considered secure if no protected data can be inferred from available queries. "In the literature, many scenarios of compromise and inference control methods have been proposed to protect SDBs," Aydinian says. "However, to date no one security control method is capable of completely preventing compromise."

Query restriction is one of several general approaches used for security control. A "query request" retrieves a subset of data from a database that meets a set of conditions. In query restriction, the kind and amount of data that can be retrieved by such queries is limited, for example, the size of the data, or the amount of overlap between data that is returned.

In one type of query restriction method, only certain sums of individual records (called "SUM queries") that meet a minimum specified size or number, and satisfy a specified set of conditions, are available to users.

Aydinian explains with an example. "Consider a company with a large number of employees. Suppose that for each member of the company, the sex, age, rank, length of employment, salary etc. is recorded. The salaries of individual employees are confidential. Suppose that only SUM queries are allowed, i.e. the sum of the salaries of the specified people is returned. Then one might pose the query: What is the sum of salaries for males, above 50, and during the last 10 years?"

The task addressed in the paper is to provide an optimal collection of SUM queries that prevents compromise of confidential information -- such as individual salaries, for instance. A natural solution is to maximize the number of available SUM queries. The authors obtain tight bounds for the maximum number of such queries that return subsets of data without compromising groups of entries.

"Future work in the query-restriction approach includes evaluation of new security-control mechanisms, which are easy to implement and guarantee absolute security," says Aydinian. "At the same time, it is desirable that these methods satisfy other criteria like richness of available queries, consistency, cost etc. It also seems promising to develop methods combining different security control mechanisms."

Divine Writers ? Selecting The Proper Automotive Seat For Your Child

The numerous automobile accidents each year which are ensuing to deaths and injuries of younger kids necessitated the usage of one other automobile safety device: child automobile seat.

The most common dilemma of most dad and mom is selecting the perfect baby automotive seat from among the many so many variations (each with its personal safety feature) that?s being bought within the market. The answer to this is no matter suits the infant comfortable, fits in your automotive snugly and is within the budget is the most effective child automobile seat that anybody can find.

All child automotive seats, and for that matter all the things that has to do with vehicular safety, has to pass. The same federal crash testing and security measures. Child automotive seats that are accepted by the federal government has the peace of mind of security, the requirements is about has to be passed by all manufacturers. For sure, even the most cost effective baby car seat sold out there has gone by way of the identical crash checks and can always protect the young against crashes supplied these are correctly installed.

Further options are nice but these add as much as the price of the child car seat. Higher prices don?t at all times mean the best, as there are no ?finest? automotive baby seats. Some extra options will solely be significant if it can be used but the car seat must fit the infant first.

After you have chosen a baby car seat that you like, the next item on your checklist is to read the producer instruction manual. The most expensive and multiple featured child car seat will not be of any use if the manufacturers guide is read thoroughly as these might have special necessities about special becoming and use.

In any occasion, the same rule will apply. Children and infants that weigh under 20 lbs. ought to be seated dealing with the rear of the car. If the kid is already one yr outdated and still beneath the required weight limits the appropriate automotive child seat have to be the convertible type however the little one still must be seated facing the rear. The convertibles could be fitted to face the front, which might be a great preparation when he/she exceeds the weight limit.

Toddler-solely seats are small transportable seats that often are a part of a stroller system. It has three to 5 point harnesses and can be used for children as much as 22 lbs. The seat normally comes with a detachable base for convenience because it means that you do not need to install the seat each time it?s used.

Larger baby automotive seats are used for older and larger babies and are forward facing. Just like the infant solely car child seat, this additionally comes with a five-point harness. Added characteristic is a padded T-Shield that?s connected to the shoulder straps and a padded tray like overhead shields that that swing down around the child.

Child car seats, it doesn?t matter what the kind is have one thing in common: they?re all designed to guard the baby from any untoward accidents that may happen in the course of the trip. And like security belt which are attached on the seat of the automobiles to harness adult passengers, baby car seats present security to the little ones on board.

Analysis: Another tumultuous year looms, but don't panic (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The looming new year may well bring as much financial turbulence as tumultuous 2011 but global investors reckon "panic" is no longer an option and just protecting your money will require taking on at least some risk.

For all this year's left-field shocks -- the euro sovereign debt and banking minefield, an unprecedented U.S. credit rating warning, Japan's earthquake, the Arab Spring uprisings -- investors have not gone to ground in quite the same way they did at the height of the credit implosion in 2007 and 2008.

That's not to say extreme "risk off" valuations that have seen top-rated government debt yields drop below equity dividend yields have not persisted and grown, even as sovereign bonds were deemed riskier and the AAA status of the United States and Germany have been threatened by credit-rating firms.

Rather this pricing has happened without the same sort of panicked market dislocation that saw a wholesale retreat from investable assets and dash for cash three years ago.

"It is frightening that these valuations can be reached in a cold and calculated manner. We have seen none of the previous panics, nor the correlations of almost all liquid and tradable assets in a scramble for cash," said Jim Wood-Smith, head of research at British wealth management firm Williams de Broe.

This shows investors need to remain invested even though nervous of macro-driven index volatility and the prospect of real losses in cash or sovereign debt over a protracted period.

It's one thing descending into the bunker to see out an air raid, it's quite another to live down there for a decade.

NO REFUGE IN MONEY FUNDS

For all the stress, volatility and gloom, investors actually pulled more than $150 billion from cash-like money market funds in 2011, according to fund-tracker EPFR. Back in 2008, almost half a trillion dollars flooded to these funds but cumulative losses since early 2009 still stand at more than a trillion.

There are two main reasons why hunkering down in "safety" is no longer an option.

One is that most traditional havens are now almost certain to lose you money in real terms over time as inflation-adjusted yields on 10-year U.S., German and Britain government bonds -- not to mention money market funds or short-term savings accounts -- are all now deeply negative.

The second is the toxic mix of slow western growth, sovereign stress and high market volatility is not going to go away in a hurry and could well define the rest of the decade.

"We do not believe that interest rates will 'normalize' for years, possibly running into decades," said Wood-Smith at Williams de Broe.

As Standard Life Investments' Rod Paris told Reuters last week: "It's easy to be very risk averse and not deal with anyone or anything, but we have a business to run."

Even the optimists -- who still see double digit global equity gains next year -- acknowledge it will at least be bumpy.

There are ways to look at the euro zone's slow-motion crisis resolution as a glass half-full. It may be the start of a historic fiscal union that bequeaths a stronger, better-functioning currency area.

Yet with the price for austerity being paid in growth and France, Italy and Spain together needing to raise up to 17 billion euros of new debt on average every week in 2012, there's clearly scope for accidents along the way.

Growth may be better in the United States, but a presidential election year brings its own stasis and longer-term control of the country's debt mountain remains unresolved. The emerging engines of China and the developing world are cooling fast and markets there have underperformed badly this year.

For the pessimists, of course, everything remains bleak.

Deutsche Bank credit strategists told clients on Monday that much of their 2012 outlook could be directly copied from last year's, hooked on fear of debt restructuring, default, haircuts, and the choice between fiscal euro union or extreme levels of money printing. "The one difference is that the stakes have become far higher 12 months on."

And so volatility, it would seem, remains the name of the game as fundamental valuations vie with "event risks" and recession risks spar with more government intervention. Stock market volatility captured by Wall Street's VIX index (.VIX) may not be near 2008 extremes, but it is remaining elevated for longer.

A poll of investors conducted by the Association of Investment Companies this week showed 96 percent expect another volatile year in 2012. However, 71 percent think that markets will ultimately go up.

When asked what gave them the greatest cause for optimism, 26 percent of managers are encouraged by strong company balance sheets. A further 26 percent believe equities still represent good value.

In a world where years of sovereign stress and negative real yields lie ahead, high-dividend blue chip stocks or high-grade corporate debt - ideally of companies with hefty emerging market exposure -- remain many money managers' investments of choice.

Williams de Broe point out that despite high correlation of top stocks and the dominance of index-tracking and use of exchange-traded funds, the past 10 years was not so much a "lost decade" for equity if stocks were carefully selected.

Even though the FTSE 100 (.FTSE) has lost more than 20 percent December 1999, more than 33 current FTSE stocks -- including blue chips such as Unilever (ULVR.L) and Tesco (TSCO.L) -- at least doubled over the same period.

"In order for portfolios to provide returns that are more than paltry, investors must take on greater risk at a time when the volatility of equity markets is highly likely to become ever greater," said Wood-Smith.

A galaxy blooming with new stars

Thursday, December 15, 2011

The VLT Survey Telescope (VST) has captured the beauty of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 253. The new portrait is probably the most detailed wide-field view of this object and its surroundings ever taken. It demonstrates that the VST, the newest telescope at ESO's Paranal Observatory, provides broad views of the sky while also offering impressive image sharpness.

NGC 253 gleams about eleven and a half million light-years away in the southern constellation of Sculptor. It is often just called the Sculptor Galaxy, although other descriptive names include the Silver Coin or Silver Dollar Galaxy. It is easy to get a good look at NGC 253 through binoculars as it is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky after the Milky Way's closest, big galactic neighbour, the Andromeda Galaxy.

Astronomers have noted the widespread active star formation in NGC 253 and labelled it a "starburst" galaxy [1]. The many bright clumps dotting the galaxy are stellar nurseries where hot young stars have just ignited. The radiation streaming from these giant blue-white babies makes the surrounding hydrogen gas clouds glow brightly (green in this image).

This nearby spiral galaxy was discovered by the German?British astronomer Caroline Herschel, the sister of the famed astronomer William Herschel, as she searched for comets in 1783. The Herschels would have been delighted by the crisp, richly detailed view of NGC 253 that the VST can provide.

This latest image of NGC 253 was taken during VST's science verification phase ? when the telescope's scientific performance is assessed before it enters operations. The VST data are being combined with infrared images from VISTA to identify the younger generations of stars in NGC 253. This picture is more than 12 000 pixels across and the superb sky conditions at ESO's Paranal Observatory, combined with the fine telescope optics, result in sharp star images over the entire image.

The VST is a 2.6-metre wide-field survey telescope with a one-degree field of view ? twice as broad as the full Moon [2]. The VST programme is a joint venture between the INAF?Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy and ESO. The 268-megapixel camera OmegaCAM at its heart is designed to map the sky both quickly and with very fine image quality. VST is the largest telescope in the world designed to exclusively survey the sky in visible light, complementing ESO's VISTA infrared survey telescope, also located at Paranal.

Zooming into this new picture not only allows a very detailed inspection of the star-forming spiral arms of the galaxy to be made, but also reveals a very rich tapestry of much more distant galaxies far beyond NGC 253.

###

[1] Further details about NGC 253 have been revealed by ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) along with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. These instruments showed in 2009 that, at its centre, NGC 253 harbours a supermassive black hole with very similar properties to those of the black hole lurking in the Milky Way's core (see ESO Press Release eso0902 http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0902/).

[2] The image presented here has been cropped and is slightly smaller than the full VST field of view.

Fresh iPhone Apps for Dec. 15: Grand Theft Auto 3, Sonic CD, Snoticles, Breakout: Boost (Appolicious)

It?s a day of big-time video game releases in the iTunes App Store. Grand Theft Auto 3, one of the most controversial (and extremely fun) games ever created, just landed this week for the incredibly low price of $5. It leads this week?s gaming selection, followed closely by an iOS version of Sonic CD, the platforming classic from 1993 from Sega. After that is a new Adult Swim title in the Angry Birds style called Snoticles, and a new brick-breaker title from Atari called Breakout: Boost.

The controversial third-person action game that has riled up parents and politicians for 10 years has finally jumped the gap from consoles to Apple?s iOS platform. That?s right, this is THE Grand Theft Auto III, the game in which you can steal cars, pick up prostitutes and get hunted down by the cops. It?s the PlayStation 2 title that took the world by storm, shrunk down to the size of your iPhone or iPad. Obviously, it?s more for adults than children.

Developer Rockstar Games has optimized the game for iOS with new touch controls and Retina-supporting HD graphics. It also has a huge amount of content ? everything that was available for PlayStation 2 players way back in 2001, which is hours and hours of missions, a huge locale to explore in Liberty City, and lots of hidden stuff to discover. If you like video games at all, you owe it to yourself to give Grand Theft Auto 3 a try.

Sonic CD (iPhone, iPad) $1.99

Another classic ported from the video game consoles of yesterday is Sonic CD, hailing from all the way back in 1993. Optimized for touch controls and packing a ton of classic side-scrolling Sonic action, this is a must-have for platforming fans and a great port from a developer, Sega, whose other games brought to iOS from other platforms can sometimes leave something to be desired.

Sonic CD has been optimized for iOS and touchscreen controls and packs HD Retina graphics for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users. It also includes both the original U.S. soundtrack, as well as the Japanese soundtrack for the game. On top of all that, Sega has secured Game Center support, which brings leaderboards, achievements and friends lists into the equation, too.

Snoticles (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Taking a page from physics-based arcade games like Angry Birds is Snoticles, a game in which you control as many as four somewhat gross cartoony characters in a title that?s all about flinging things at other things to earn points. All four of your heroes (ones a pimple, ones a ball of snot and the other two are kind of unidentifiable) throw different implements of destruction and their weapons have different properties. You?ll have to use the right tool for the job to get maximum points as you clear each level of enemies by blowing up the ?alpha? enemy in each one.

Snoticles packs ?dozens? of levels across five separate worlds, each mixing an Angry Birds-style arcade feel with puzzles to solve. It also packs Game Center support, providing you with leaderboards and achievements that allow you to check your abilities against those of other players.

Breakout: Boost (iPhone, iPad) Free (with $0.99 in-app purchase)

There are lots of brick-breaker titles in the iTunes App Store, but not all of them are free ? or at least partially free. Atari?s Breakout: Boost, on the other hand, comes with its first five levels for free. It also packs plenty of classic arcade action. You control a plate with by sliding your finger around, bouncing a ball toward the top of the screen and using it to break a bunch of bricks planted up there. A new rumor points to the potential power of the Wii U (Digital Trends)

We still don?t know the exact date when the Wii U will descend upon us, but Nintendo?s next offering?and the first console in the next generation of gaming?is stepping ever closer to reality?if the reports and leaks are to be believed.

It is tough to keep a secret when your technology is semi-dependent on numerous third-party developers. Earlier in the year, EA claimed that the Wii U would be?at least as powerful as the Xbox 360 and PS3, and possibly up to 50-percent more powerful. Yet through it all, Nintendo has remained mum on what to expect from its next offering.

That?s OK though, we have the internet.

According to a source that spoke with Wii U Daily, the Wii U is being tested with the following specs under the hood:

  • Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU
  • 768 MB of DRAM ?embedded? with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU
  • Unknown, 40nm ATI-based GPU
While this should be considered a rumor?as all news about the Wii U should be classified as a rumor until Nintendo decides to officially release info?it is in keeping with what we?ve been hearing. With one exception. It is worth noting the insane amount of eDRAM listed, which means that it is either a typo, a confirmation that the source is wrong, or that the Wii U is going to be so powerful that it may become sentient and try to take over the world.

The article also notes that the ?Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU? is very close to the Xbox 360 and PS3?which is true as both run 3.2 GHz processors, although the architecture is very different and a direct?comparison?is?pointless?until we have all the details. The source also claims that the Nintendo has been testing two versions, one with 768 MB of DRAM, and the other with 1 GB.

With the exception of the memory listed, it sounds fairly close to the rumors we heard earlier in the year which claimed that the Wii U would be roughly 50-percent more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, lending a bit of credence to the source.?The Wii U will also support 1080p graphics and Nintendo has confirmed that it is investigating the possibility of 3D compatibility.

The thing that really stands out though is the mention of the possibility of 1 GB eDRAM. To put that in perspective, the Xbox 360 has 10 MB of eDRAM, while the PS3 does not use any. Embedded DRAM is becoming more and more common in both the gaming industry and for computing processors in general, but even the brand new POWER7 processor from IBM that was released just last year only features 32 MB of eDRAM.

That shouldn???t invalidate the rest of the rumor though, as it is far more likely that the Wii U will have some amount of eDRAM, but the 768 MB or 1 GB RAM is referring to more traditional memory. The Xbox 360 has 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM, while the PS3 uses 256 MB. If the 768 MB is correct, that would be in keeping with the ???50-percent more powerful??

But for now it is all just rumor and innuendo, and we may have a long wait before us until we have solid details from Nintendo. ?
