Article Directory :: Home & Family Articles
Have you ever noticed that the family homes in American films are always so big and cosy? With wrap-around porches, hanging swing chairs and big gardens? It's as if we can all just assume that the average family has millions and millions of dollars. Of course, most things about American films feed into stereotypes. The male bachelors always live in pimped-out apartments with minimal decorations and furniture in various shades of beige, the eclectic young women always live in dingy flats that from the inside look like a garage sale. I suppose some of these Hollywood stereotypes might be based on truths. What are some of the other home interiors you might see (in reality or in the movies)?
1. The rich kid's flat:
The world's obsession with luxury and wealth has led to a lot of television shows and films about young men and women who live very privileged lives. While many of them don't work they still have the means to be beautifully dressed and kept at all times. They live in gorgeous penthouses in the world's biggest cities, drive expensive cars and attend the hottest parties. If only?.
2. The working woman's flat:
Hollywood tends to be most deceiving when portraying the flats and lifestyle of single, working men and women (but especially women). They paint these ladies as working flexible schedules at poorly paid jobs, but yet still have the means to eat every meal out, wear a new designer outfit every day of the week, and live in a pretty nice flat in a good neighbourhood. Hello? But life is simply not that easy.
3. The artist's studio:
These elaborate artists studios are typically located anywhere from New York City lofts to beautiful estates in Tuscany. It's as if these artists have all inherited tons of money before deciding to become artists. So much so that they can afford to paint, drink and eat all day, while entertaining their friends and taking weekend getaways to pursue love affairs and find inspiration in far off lands.
I love the movies as much as the next person, but it is slightly infuriating to be fed these lies. I am here to call it like it is. Working woman living in big cities - they need to be making quite a chunk of change if they can afford to live in a nice flat, on their own, in a good neighbourhood, with fancy furniture. The truth: Most of them live in flat shares, take public transport wherever they go, and buy their clothes at H&M. The artist? If they can afford to live without taking up a second job they are probably doing so in squalor i.e. a tiny room where the toilet is in the kitchen, they eat canned food and feed their drinking habits at gallery openings.
